Prosumer Must Haves

  • Manual Controls
  • - If you don't have manual controls you remove most of the flexibility and ability to use your imagination on your video project. Being able to manually control focus, exposure, shutter speed and sound gives you a world of possibilities when recording. If your device only allows you to do things manually you may be sacrificing the look and feel of your recordings.
  • Low Light Performance
  • - Low light performance is not something that many consumers think about when buying a camera. The first time they visit an amusement park at night, or watch a fireworks display on the Fourth of July they realize that their shots do not have enough light. Look into a camcorder which has good to excellent low light performance.
  • External Microphone Jack or Hot Shoe
  • - If you want the best audio possible you must have the ability to utilize an external microphone. Internal microphones will get the job done but they are likely to pick up motor noise and noise from sources outside of your shot. Using an external microphone minimizes this audio interference and gives you cleaner sound. Even if you are not initially planning to purchase an external microphone it is a good practice to purchase a model with an external jack or hot shoe in case you decide to upgrade your audio capabilities in the future.
  • Image Stabilization
  • - We all have a little natural shimmy in our shake. The image stabilization function gives you smooth shots and professional performance every time.
  • Lens Threads
  • - Without lens threads you lose out on the ability to do some essential and fun things with your camcorder. Lens threads allow you to add UV filters, fish eye lenses, and wide angle lenses to your camcorder. These protective features and enhancements give you sharper shots and allow you to be creative.
  • 8-Megapixel or Higher Still Shots
  • - You don't want to be caught in a situation without your camera. Having the ability to take photos gives your more creative power and agility.

Prosumer Nice to Haves

  • Color Controls
  • - Having color modes and color customization allows you to adjust the color if you feel it is not true to life or just to have a little fun. Each camcorder seems to have a bit of a difference in the output color. If the devices are high quality you may not notice much of a difference in the color. If you choose a camcorder with good color quality this feature may not be carry that much weight when you make a decision on which one to purchase.
  • Hard Disk / Flash memory
  • - Some people prefer flash memory because they are built in. You can connect your device directly to a computer and download your footage. If you can buy the same model without a hard disk or flash memory you will save a bit of money. You can get the same amount of memory and more flexibility if you use an SD card. If the price of an SD card with the same amount of memory is less than the difference between a device with or without a hard disk drive the model without the hard disk drive may be the better choice.
  • Viewfinder
  • - Most devices have an LCD screen where you can see all of the action. Some models also include a viewfinder for you to look through. Viewfinders usually give you a steadier shot and they are great for outdoor shots because the LCD screen can pick up some glare.Using the viewfinder also allows you to save battery power. When you want convenience, instant playback, and better framing of your shot, the LCD screen is king.
  • Simultaneous Video / Still Recording
  • - Being able to snap still photos while you are recording video is a nice concept. Usually most people who are recording an event or activity want to view the "action" at a later date. Most people do not concentrate on moments to take snap shots while they are recording either, so many prime photo ops are usually missed.

Definitions

  • Image Stabilization
  • - Techniques used to reduce blurring associated with the motion of a camcorder during exposure. It compensates for pan and tilt.
  • Frame Rate
  • - The frequency at which an imaging device produces unique consecutive images called frames.
  • Face Detection
  • - Technology that determines the locations and sizes of human faces in digital images. It detects facial features and ignores anything else, such as buildings, cars, and bodies.
  • Aperture
  • - Controls the amount of light that can reach the image of the device, regulates the exposure and controls depth of field. The aperture is to the camcorder, what the pupil is to the eye.
  • Gain
  • - Amplifies signal strength in low light conditions.
  • Shutter Speed
  • - The length of time a camera's shutter is open. The total exposure is the duration of light reaching the film or image sensor.
